It gets you talking deeply!

At least a month before the wedding, start talking to each other about what you’ll each say (even if you don’t reveal the exact words). This will have the nice side effect of causing you to reflect on your relationship, where it’s been, and where you see it going. In the midst of wedding planning, this can be a wonderful thing.

You can say what you want!

There are some truly lovely traditional vows out there, but none of them were specifically written about your unique relationship with this person. This is your chance, in front of the people closest to you, to reveal why you’re standing up there, what it means to you, and how you’re going to honor this person for the rest of your life.

It’ll be more fun for guest!

Chances are, your guests have been to a fe weddings before - possibly several this season. Watching traditional vows over and over again is a little like watching reruns on TV: enjoyable, but not as great as watching a new episode. Think of your ceremony as the “Wedding Show” - writing your vows will make it a memorable episode.
